Trey Gowdy has become a conservative hero over the last year because of his relentless questioning witnesses in the IRS and Benghazi scandals. With celebrity comes speaking and fundraising invitations, but Gowdy has refused to use Benghazi as a fundraising tool.
When the Republican Party of Virginia sent out an invitation for a $75/plate, $5,000 VIP option fundraiser with the hashtag #GowdyOnBenghazi, eyebrows were raised.
National Review reported Monday morning about the fundraiser, entitled Beyond Benghazi:
Last year, Gowdy told MSNBCs Morning Joe he wouldnt use the tragedy to raise political funds:
I have never sought to raise a single penny on the backs of four murdered Americans. There are, even in a culture of hyper-partisanship, certain things that ought to be above politics, like the murder of our four fellow Americans.
In keeping with his pledge, Gowdy pulled out of the event. A spokesperson told Mediaite:
The Chairman was unaware that organizers of this event intended to feature or even mention Benghazi. He has not raised money using Benghazi, and will not speak about Benghazi at fundraising events. Having been made aware of this groups plan, he no longer will be participating in the event.
Leave it to the Virginia Republican Party to be so tone deaf. After all this is the same party which propped up the corrupt, amnesty-pimping former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor before his defeat by immigration hawk and now Congressman Dave Brat in his primary last year.
Congressman Trey Gowdy continues to be one of the most popular conservative congressmen in the country. Recently, many leading conservatives tried to encourage Gowdy to run for Speaker of the House against John Boehner.
