Earlier this month, HRC held its first ever business summit focused on LGTBQ workplace inclusion in Jackson, Mississippi. The event, The Future of Workplace Inclusion, provided an opportunity for corporate leaders to learn about the business and economic development case for equality. Participants also learned best practices for making their business or organization fully inclusive of LGBTQ people.
Baker Donelson Law Firm sponsored and hosted the event, and the participants included businesses and organizations from across the state. Other sponsors included Chevron, Mississippi Power, Sanderson Farms, Wells Fargo Advisors, Ingalls Shipbuilding, Entergy, Hope Credit Union, the Else School of Management at Millsaps, Pritchett Engineering and Bradley Arant Law Firm.
Representatives from Baker Donelson kicked off the event with a presentation on the legal landscape for LGBTQ workplace inclusion. During this session, participants were briefed on the current trends and legal standards related to sexual orientation, gender stereotypes and gender identity in the workplace.
Beck Bailey, Deputy Director of Employee Engagement at HRC Foundation, then presented HRC’s climate research and the importance of LGBTQ workplace inclusion. The event took place just days after HRC released the 2017 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), the premier national benchmarking tool on corporate policies, practices and benefits pertinent to LGBTQ employees. Attendees also had the opportunity to learn more about the CEI and how to improve their organizations’ ratings.
After presenting, Bailey moderated a panel of experts from Entergy and Ingalls Shipbuilding. The panel included Amanda Vallejo, Diversity & Inclusion Manager and EEO Compliance, Huntington Ingalls and Dakin Dubroc, Director of Organizational Health & Diversity, Entergy. These industry leaders shared their perspectives and lessons they have learned from diversity and inclusion efforts at their respective companies and their successes implementing LGBTQ initiatives.
